#139 - The Power of Storytelling in Marketing (AI Test)

My adventure with artificial intelligence

This is Adventures in Storytelling your weekly note with resources, insights, and actionable tools for better communication through storytelling. Enjoy.

So like any curious person right now, I’ve been playing around with AI over the past few months. Mostly Chat Gpt, but also Notion AI and any others sent my way. Notion AI came highly recommended by other writers. I’d been putting it off for some time, but have wanted to do a test of sorts with it to see if the fears were true: that AI would take all our jobs and destroy human life as we know it (I asked it, it said it wouldn’t 🤓). I’m generally an AI realist, it’s here, we it’s not going anywhere because there is money to be made through it, so let’s try to understand it.

I’ve found the more I’ve played around with AI tools, the more I appreciate them as aids than I worry about them destroying my job. Google AI art or read a student paper written by AI and you’ll see what I mean. It has far to go. On that note, my test. I asked Notion AI to write a newsletter post.

My prompt was: “Write a 500 word newsletter post about the power of storytelling in marketing in the style of Chantaie Allick. Include five tips to start using storytelling right away.”

This is what it came back with:

As Chantaie Allick once said, "Marketing is no longer about the stuff you make, but about the stories you tell." Stories have a way of capturing our attention and leaving a lasting impression. In today's competitive market, it's more important than ever to connect with your audience on an emotional level. This is where storytelling comes in.

Here are five tips to help you start incorporating storytelling into your marketing strategy:

1. Know Your Audience

The first step in creating a compelling story is understanding who you're telling it to. Take the time to research your audience and identify their pain points, desires, and values. This will help you tailor your story to resonate with them on a deeper level.

2. Keep it Simple

Your story doesn't have to be complex to be effective. In fact, some of the most memorable stories are the simplest ones. Focus on a single message and use clear, concise language to convey it.

3. Show, Don't Tell

Instead of telling your audience what your product or service does, show them how it can solve their problems or improve their lives. Use real-life examples and customer testimonials to bring your story to life.

4. Be Authentic

Authenticity is key when it comes to storytelling. Don't try to be something you're not or make false promises. Your audience will see right through it. Instead, be honest and transparent about your brand and what you stand for.

5. Use Emotion

Emotion is what makes stories stick. Use it to your advantage by creating a story that evokes a strong emotional response from your audience. Whether it's joy, sadness, or empathy, tapping into your audience's emotions will help them connect with your brand on a deeper level.

In conclusion, storytelling is a powerful tool that can help you connect with your audience and stand out in a crowded market. By following these five tips, you can start incorporating storytelling into your marketing strategy today. Remember, it's not about the stuff you make, but the stories you tell.

… 😬 😬 😬

Okay…Notion AI… In my opinion, not great. But impressive for a machine. I don’t hate the headlines. I think it’s missing the storytelling elements of communication—a list of forgettable facts instead of a story readers can hold onto and remember. I put my immediate reactions to it together in a video (not AI, I promise), ignore my unmade up face, I was in work mode.
